I DIY I've always wanted to try is doing a photo transfer onto wood! Have yous e'er tried information technology?
I know at that place are several different means to do this, but I chose the i that looked funnest, easiest, and looks the most awesome when it's done! I beloved the way you tin see the wood grain showing through the epitome when you're information technology's finished.

Supplies for Photo Transfers to Wood
- Slab of wood (I used pino because it's inexpensive and has gorgeous wood grain)
- Photo printed on bones printer paper in the size you desire
- Modernistic Podge
- Foam brush
- Rolling Pivot
Since Father's Solar day is coming upwardly, I wanted to effort this photograph transferring technique on something that I could requite to my dad every bit a gift. Handmade gifts are the best, right?!
He and my mom have always loved boating, even since very early on in their marriage (they just celebrated 45 years beingness married!)
one. Choose an image to transfer to wood
I wanted to use a flick of him and my mom canoeing at George Wythe lake a few weeks ago with one of my daughters and my niece.
2. Print out your prototype onto printer paper
I rummaged around our woodshop until I constitute a slab of pino that was about the correct size, and printed my image onto a plain piece of printer newspaper (can be either ink jet OR laser printer!). This is of import! DO NOT USE PHOTO PAPER!
Note, when yous transfer the paradigm to wood, information technology will be a mirror image of the original photo. If there's text on your epitome, or you merely really don't want information technology to be mirror image for another reason, you can use an app or photograph editing software to create a mirror image of the original before printing it.
3. Smother in Mod Podge
Glob some Modern Podge on the Forepart of your image, and spread it on evenly with a sponge brush. Make certain y'all accept a nice smooth coat that covers every foursquare inch of the newspaper! I laid out a sheet of wax paper to protect my surface during this stride.
3. Smooth image onto forest
While the Mod Podge is nevertheless good and wet, go ahead and flip it over and press face-down onto the wood, smoothing from the middle to the edges. It's easy to move the image around a bit fifty-fifty after it's been placed on the woods, so you can make sure it's overnice and center now. And so scroll with a rolling pin to actually smooth it out. I well-nigh skipped this step, merely I'm and then glad I didn't. I really made the paper flush with the forest!
4. Let it dry out
This stride is the hardest function of the procedure. You lot MUST let it dry for 24 hours. This isn't the time to cutting corners. Prepare information technology aside, and prepare a time on your telephone, and just PUT IT OUT OF YOUR MIND. Longest 24 hours of my life. 😉
5. Rub off paper
Now that the entirety of the 24 hours has passed (right?), it'south time to soak down the paper and peel/rub it off! I sprayed my newspaper down with a eject bottle of h2o, and let it sit down for a few minutes. You could as well only lay a wednesday washcloth on it to soak instead.
With a wet washcloth (not dripping), start gently rubbing abroad at a corner of your paradigm. The paper will come off, leaving the image permanently a part of the wood!
One time I felt like I had the majority of the paper off, I allow information technology dry for a few minutes and so information technology would be obvious where I withal need to remove some paper.
Then I sprayed information technology downwardly and allow information technology soak once again. When it'southward wet with a picayune standing water, yous can actually run across the spots that are raised and still need to be rubbed off!
6. Sand the edges (optional)
I took an orbital sander and sanded off the edges a bit to make it await more than organic… like the woods and image accept a smooth transition into each other.
seven. Seal with Mod Podge
After letting the whole thing dry out completely (and confirming you got all the paper off), information technology'south fourth dimension to seal this baby! Brush on a generous layer of Mod Podge of the unabridged surface. It will appear white at first, but dries completely clear. AND it volition brand your photo announced even more than vibrant and bright than when it was dry!
It's not perfect, but I even love all the imperfections!
Nick helped me build a little frame for this guy, and I'm so incredibly happy with how this turned out! I can't look to give it to my Dad for Male parent'southward day to commemorate his love for canoeing!
I was originally planning to paint the frame white or black, but I really kind of love it being the same wood as the photo transfer! It really allows the epitome to exist the star!
I hope y'all enjoyed this tutorial, and volition give this technique a try for yourself! It'southward such an like shooting fish in a barrel DIY and has super fun results!
