What Reading Level Is the Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye The Catcher in the Rye question

What is the best historic period to read this? I was thinking about giving it to a eight and ten year onetime. Too immature?

I'm fifteen. I was absolutely obsessed with this book last year, first read it when I was thirteen. I would recommend talking to your kid almost the book. As far as the swearing and sexual stuff goes, twelve year olds take definitely heard worse. Don't know about ten twelvemonth olds, though, and hopefully not eight-year-olds. It's mostly goddamn and sonuvabitch, with one f-bomb that doesn't come from Holden.

Still, I completely copied Holden's worldview onto my own, including his misanthropy (misogyny?)...I all the same love Holden, but he definitely has his faults, and they were faults I looked over because I idolized him. Basically, when you know your kids aren't in that phase where they copy everything they read from books, they can read this. Talk to them almost information technology - how Allie died, and how that changes the way Holden thinks of the world.

I'1000 non particularly a fan of phoniness, but you demand some to get along in the earth, and if yous've got it, information technology'southward non the exist all and terminate all. Simply so long as you don't define yourself by the superficial things everyone around Holden rambles on about. Equally long as information technology doesn't get in the way of your empathy and connection with other people, you tin relish as much superficial stuff as you want.

Trouble is, the people effectually Holden connect with each other solely based on superficial stuff, and that's...non great. Only I call back superficial stuff can be an entry bespeak into a deeper connection, and unfortunately, that is manifestly something Holden is not going to test. Unless things work out after all with that Catholic lawn tennis guy.

Whew! Sorry, that was a huge digression. Moral of the story: Holden isn't perfect. I recollect existence eight or ten, you wouldn't really connect with him. How old? Depends how mature they are. Honestly, I wasn't that mature at thirteen (definitely not as mature as I thought I was), and I'm even so not that mature.

It'll entreatment to them when their Malaise comes in, which happened to me at twelve, so. Just talk with them when they practice read it, brand certain they grasp what I didn't grasp. Yous don't want them going on a ii-twelvemonth-long journey of misanthropy and loneliness because everyone is phony, and self-hatred considering oH nO WhAt iF I'M pHOnY Too?

I'd say thats a bit too young I recommend it for someone around 13-15 maybe more towards the fifteen side

Information technology's on high school reading lists for a reason. Additionally, I think 8 to ten year olds would be bored to tears.

I judge the optimum historic period is to a higher place 15. nevertheless, if one reads it earlier he can accept a better understanding by reading information technology again subsequently in his/her life

I was xvi and liked it; nosotros studied it alongside A Separate Peace.

My 16 y/o daughter had it in lit this year and didn't intendance for it.

I was xiii when I offset read it. I think that's an OK age.

I'd agree with the above. It is a book about adolescent rebelliousness which has an perennial entreatment to teenagers. Wouldn't think a 10 year quondam be that interested nor for that thing anyone over the age of 25.

I read it when I was older, around 21 or and then, but I teach it to high schoolhouse sophomores who are around 15-sixteen. They enjoy it and can relate to the storyline. Sometimes, I've had parents annotate on the use of offensive language. And so older is definitely improve.

I read it in my early on teens. This book discusses rather frankly many things I'm not sure an eight or ten year old would want to read near or, depending on who they are, even know most. I'd wait till the younger ane is at least 13.

thirteen-up. I was in middle school when I read information technology so that would have been around 13-15.

I read this book in four sittings. Aged 72, I read it it as rapidly every bit possible. I had a semi-bff in high schoolhouse who resembles Holden. He really had a hold on me. I loved hanging out with him. I call back I'll read it again.

I read information technology while I was in high school and then read information technology again when I was in my mid-40s and I still loved it. Perhaps somebody tin explain to me why these and so-chosen "book nazis" want to ban it and why information technology turns up on the bookshelves in conspiracy and spy movies.

My kids are x and eleven and I do think they're besides immature to read information technology. High school age might exist meliorate.

I inappreciably think 8-10 is an appropriate age to read this book. Children need to exist children they don't need adult-content shoved in their faces.

read it at 15 did not go it 20 years later aforementioned response. what is the big deal about this book. This is the Bob Dylan of books. Everybody says it is great I don't see it

Eight or x is besides young. Maturity may vary. However, my judge is they will either be bored, or enquire lots of questions. Just they will understand it. I personally don't think this is a book you lot should explain to anyone.

The proper historic period is when they start rolling their eyes, and are besides embarrassed to be seen with you. Then tell them this volume is strictly off limits. But "accidentally" leave a copy out.

No Ed your not the oldest person to read it. I think it could exist me. Im 65 years old . This is one of my favourite books. Ive read it a few times and I know, I will read it again. I would dearest to be able to read the unpublished book I think im correct in proverb its chosen The Bounding main Is Full Of Bowling Balls. Not to be published until 50years after the authors expiry. Im with you on this I didnt like the book! I loved it, fifty-fifty though I feel a bit downwardly and upset later on Ive read information technology.

I think you lot have to be effectually the age of Holden to really connect with him. Or at least remember how you felt at that age :)
I read it at 17 and information technology was the perfect historic period for me.

viii and 10 is style to young. They won't empathize information technology. I'd say fourteen and up.

13, teaches what not to exercise when you're older

information technology's a teenage story, so anywhere betwixt xiii and 21 i'd say

i tried to re read it every bit a thirty year former and had completely lost the in route to that mindset

For the record I read The Catcher in the Rye for the offset time earlier this year and I am in my lx's. Am I the last person in the US over the age of xv to have read this? Peradventure. Did I like it? I loved information technology! I think this is a timeless archetype.

deleted user Couldn't agree more than! (Tho I read information technology when I was 16 and I literally just turned 17 a week agone) Couldn't concur more! (Tho I read it when I was xvi and I literally just turned 17 a calendar week ago) ...more than
